A family kitchen in Cape Town

Zad began with the food we grew up eating: falafel on a Friday morning, biscuits baked by the tray before Eid, and something sweet always ready for guests.

We still cook it the same way, by hand and in small batches. The recipes come from Sudan, with a few picked up around the wider Middle Eastern table.

In Arabic, zād is the food you pack for a journey.
